A resident at Angusfield House Care Home in Aberdeen has been putting his DIY skills to good use after taking on a special new role, proving that moving into care doesn't mean giving up the hobbies and activities you love.
Stuart McRae, who has always enjoyed keeping busy with maintenance jobs and DIY projects, has officially been appointed the home's very own 'Low Maintenance Assistant', complete with his own staff-style badge, which he proudly wears each day. Before moving into Angusfield House Care Home, Stuart was known for his practical skills and took great pride in maintaining his home, regularly carrying out repairs and odd jobs.
Keen to continue doing something he loves, Stuart began lending a helping hand to the care home's maintenance team, Jim and Paul, particularly with low-level painting projects around the home. Recognising how much enjoyment and satisfaction Stuart gained from these activities, the team spoke with him and his family about making his involvement a more regular part of his routine.

His wife was delighted with the idea, commenting: "This is a brilliant idea and Stuart will love this. He has always fixed things at home, and I didn't have to pay for anyone to do it."
Now proudly sporting his new badge, Stuart has embraced his role with enthusiasm, enjoying the opportunity to work alongside Jim and Paul while helping to keep his home looking its best. Stuart said he is delighted with his new role and enjoys feeling involved and valued within the home.
Beyond the painting and maintenance tasks, the role has provided Stuart with something equally important: a sense of purpose, independence and a familiar routine to look forward to each morning.
Wisdom Gavor, Home Manager at Angusfield House Care Home, commented:
"Moving into a care home shouldn't mean leaving behind the things that make you who you are. Stuart has always taken pride in being hands-on, and it's wonderful to see him continuing to enjoy something he's passionate about.
"His new role has given him a real sense of purpose, and he's certainly become a valued member of our maintenance team! It's about recognising each resident as an individual and creating opportunities for them to continue doing the things they love."
The initiative is part of Angusfield House Care Home's commitment to person-centred care, recognising that maintaining lifelong interests, skills and routines can play an important role in residents' happiness and wellbeing.
By focusing on what residents can do, rather than what they can't, the team hopes to create meaningful opportunities that allow individuals to remain active, independent and involved in everyday life. And for Stuart, there's the added satisfaction of knowing his DIY skills are still very much in demand!
