Celebrating Our Care Home Cup Hero – Tommy’s Victory in 1970

What began as a simple celebration took on a heartfelt meaning when we honored one of our very own heroes.
This month, our care home paid tribute to Tommy, a former star player for Aberdeen Football Club’s legendary 1970 Scottish Cup–winning team.

Back in May 1970, Tommy and his teammates brought home the coveted Scottish Cup, an extraordinary achievement that lit up Aberdeen and beyond. To mark that iconic moment, The Press & Journal (P&J) featured an extensive spread on Tommy. It wasn’t just about his past triumphs, the article spotlighted his loved ones, the proud family that supported him every step of the way.

Fast forward 55 years and that same sense of pride has once again filled our halls. This date marks a fantastic milestone: 55 years since Tommy’s defining moment at Hampden Park, and we couldn’t miss a chance to honor it.
This event wasn’t just about reminiscing about the past, it was about bringing our community together. We honored Tommy not only to celebrate a sports legend, but to shine a spotlight on the people who make our home so special: residents who inspire us, staff who dedicate their care and families who keep the bonds alive.

We invited Tommy’s family to join us for a tribute that reflected their journey together through the decades.
For Tommy, it was a deeply personal acknowledgment of his past, celebrated in the company of those who matter most to him. For residents, it was a reminder that every life here is rich with stories worth honoring. For staff, it reinforced our mission to create moments of belonging and respect.
For families, it offered a shared moment of pride and nostalgia, tying past achievements to the here-and-now care and support.
Our Scottish Cup celebration was a day full of purpose, emotion and collective pride. Marking 55 years since Aberdeen’s 1970 triumph, we honored Tommy, our resident hero and the people who shared his journey. Through this event, we celebrated not just a sporting victory but the enduring power of community, memory and care.
